2-Year Limited Warranty

Originally designed to mimic the popular Japanese Garden Knife, hori hori roughly translates to “dig dig”. This hearty, multi-purpose tool is built for versatility. Pound in tent stakes with the flat pommel base. Measure planting depth with the handy inch marks. Saw a branch or whittle kindling with the rust-resistant doubled edge. Made for use in the backyard, camping, bush-crafting, or anywhere you need it.

Smooth and durable walnut handle seamlessly fits with the heat-tempered 6 ¾" pointed blade for a tool that just feels good in your hand. Added twine cutter doubles as a bottle opener, so you can enjoy a refreshing beverage of your choice after a hard day’s work.

The ultimate shield for the ultimate tool, the Hori Hori Sheath unites utility and design. Made of 900D polyester with an interior liner, it weathers real-world use while protecting the blade from dulling. Stainless steel belt clip supports easy carrying and accessibility, while the strong handle strap restricts the blade from slipping or moving. Open-end allows for easy cleaning and prevents soil buildup, preserving the blade for years of continued use. Accented with full-grain leather and copper to complement the rest of our Woodsman Collection.

Blade:
Apply a thin coat of protective oil after each use. Wipe clean of dirt, water, and fingerprints regularly. Use a medium to fine file to straighten out any larger dings or nicks in the blade. The edge can be honed with a medium sharpening disk or stone.

Sheath:
Waxed canvas should never be dry cleaned or machine washed. It can be cleaned carefully by hand. Brush off the loose dirt, rinse the surface with cold water, gently scrub with a brush, then let air dry. If stains persist, use mild bar soap or saddle soap.

After cleaning, waxed canvas may need to be re-waxed. To do so, use a wax conditioner and apply following the manufacturer's instructions.

Q: Why 900D Polyester?
A: 900D Polyester is water-resistant, resistant to bacteria, and very durable which makes it ideal for extended use in the outdoors.

Q: Can I store my Hori Hori outside for extended periods of time?
A: The Hori Hori is not meant to be stored outside for long periods of time. Extended exposure to wet conditions may cause rust and unnecessary wear and tear. We recommend storing your garden tools indoors after use to help them last as long as possible and to avoid the need to purchase a replacement.

Q: Where are Barebones garden products made?
A: Our garden products are designed in Salt Lake City, Utah, and manufactured by trusted facilities in China who meet Business Social Compliance (BSCI) or who are working towards their compliance with our support and guidance.

Q: How do I sharpen my Hori Hori?
A: The Hori Hori has two different blades - Straight and serrated. The straight blade edge can be honed using a typical sharpening stone. If blade is too dull for honing, you can reset the bevel using a standard mill file. (See Barebones File & Stone Sharpening Kit.) For serrated side, use a 13/64" round file or diamond stone to revive each section of the blade.

The Materials

Dense, smooth walnut. Heat-treated 4CR13 stainless steel. These two durable materials come together to create one of our most beloved and celebrated tools. Known for its density and fine, straight grain, walnut gives the Hori Hori handle a high-end feel without being too heavy. 4CR13 stainless steel exhibits good polishing and resharpening properties and excellent resistance to corrosion, both crucial qualities for a hard-worked woodsman tool.

The Inspiration

After studying and experimenting with garden tools from countless different countries, cultures, and climates, we discovered the Hori Hori. First implemented in Japan, the Hori Hori was originally used for careful and methodical excavating of plants, such as Sansai, in high elevation mountains. Translated from Japanese, Hori Hori means "dig dig", a perfect nod to the original and most common use.

The Design

We took the iconic Hori Hori and elevated it to a woodsman-style tool. The Hori Hori Ultimate is a hearty multi-purpose tool to use in your backyard, camping, bush-crafting, or anywhere you need it. Pound in tent stakes with the flat pommel base. Measure planting depth with the handy inch marks. Saw a branch or whittle kindling with the rust-resistant, double-edged blade. Use the twine cutter & bottle opener to crack open a fresh one at the end of the day.

This version has the option of a durable sheath made of waxed canvas and reinforced lining. Clip it to your belt for easy access on any adventure.

Five Stars but PLEASE FIX THE HOLSTER

I'm giving this five stars because how can I not. The tool itself is great. It's sharp, it feels great in the hand, and it's well constructed. The biggest issue with this product is the holster.

The little button strap around the handle is a complete nuisance. I'm in my garden and I'm pulling this thing out of my belt holster hundreds of times a day. Trying to wrangle with that strap every time I try to put the knife back in is killing me. I don't even try to button it because what's the point? I'll be taking it out again soon anyway. I hate to do this, but I'm probably going to have to remove that strap with a knife because it is just constantly getting in the way.

Anyway great product. Please come up with a better way to secure this than with that strap and I'll be thrilled.

A true “go-to” tool that is as advertised

The hori-hori Ultimate will be used for as long as it lasts, which when in my hand, feels like it will last a long time. I have the commonly poor Central Texas rocky, clay “soil” (and “soil” is being kind) with tree roots and other tubers. The sharpened point cuts into the earth and the tool can pry out small to medium sized stones. Plus, the serrated edge quickly cuts through roots as needed. I love the walnut handle and the weight and balance are excellent. The sheath also feels stout enough to keep any “forgetful” hands from catching an edge. I almost forgot: the twine cutter works as advertised, too. I haven’t pounded on anything yet (and I’m likely to use a hammer for that type of task anyway) but the hori-hori ultimate does feel substantial enough to serve in that capacity if sensibly used.

Rare Combination of Quality and Affordability

I bought this as a gift and it was one of those that I really had to fight myself from keeping it. It’s a beautiful piece of heavy well-built metal and I was very impressed. I’ll be keeping an eye on a performance report from my giftee.

    Good looking

I would not use this knife to pound tent stakes but definitely looking forward to gardening. Very handsome sheath.
