4 Reasons We Use LED Lights

What is an LED Light?

Meet the LED light: an abbreviation for light-emitting diode. A diode is a conducting material that produces light when an electric current is applied to it. Unlike an incandescent light, it does this without relying on heat transference, meaning the LED light produced is more vibrant and far cooler to the touch than a traditional incandescent bulb.

There are many differences between how LED lights and incandescent bulbs operate to produce light - and it’s worth considering which will work best when you’re shopping for a light source of any kind. In general, LED lights are far more efficient than their counterparts. Here are four reasons why Barebones utilizes LED lights in our products as well as recommends them for your home and outdoor adventures.

LED lightbulbs have a long lifespan and don’t “burn out” in the same manner as your traditional lightbulb. Instead, the internal diode will dim over time. On average, an LED lamp can last over 20,000 hours, making LED lights far more reliable and cost-effective than a traditional incandescent bulb. They also are an ideal choice for outdoor lighting that needs to last long hours while at camp or while hiking (like our Beacon Lantern or Railroad Lantern)

Incandescent bulbs provide light through heat, resulting in hot-to-the-touch bulbs, but LED bulbs have a unique mechanism called a “heat sink” within the light bulb. This mechanism is typically made of copper, aluminum, or a composite and serves the purpose of absorbing as much heat as possible, meaning the bulb stays cool to the touch. Thanks to this heat sink, an LED bulb projects only 5% in heat waste and utilizes up to 95% of light output!

Though more expensive at the initial purchase, LED bulbs prove to be far more cost-effective over time (up to 80% less expensive than their incandescent counterparts) as they use less energy to power and are much more efficient. This is one of the major reasons they make great options for indoor fixtures or recessed lighting.

A longer lifespan per bulb means far less product waste over time and less energy output. Not only are LED lights generally brighter and more efficient than incandescent bulbs, but they’re also far more durable, offering ease and versatility while camping, hiking, or just enjoying your backyard. (They are less likely to break if you accidentally drop one!)

We’re proud to offer a variety of LED-powered lights that are rechargeable, portable, packable, and stylish - ready to accompany you on all your adventures.
